The whirlwind of events immediately following the Kennedy assassination created an atmosphere of mayhem. Amidst the turmoil, however, the new President, Lyndon B. Johnson, determined that the country and the world should clearly see that the orderly transition of governmental power taking place as smoothly as possible.
A few minutes after 2:30 p.m. CST, President Johnson arrived at Air Force One from Parkland Hospital in order to return to Washington, D.C. The late President Kennedy’s body was also removed from the hospital and placed aboard the plane. At exactly 2:38 p.m. CST, with Jacqueline Kennedy to his left, Lady Bird Johnson to his right, and a plane full with both Kennedy and Johnson staffers, Lyndon Baines Johnson was sworn in as the 36th President of the United States. The oath of office was administered by Federal Judge Sarah T. Hughes, using a Roman Catholic missal belonging to President Kennedy.
